Paperweight - Commerce Muse
In 1886 eight large allegorical artworks by Italian artist Tommaso Juglaris were installed in the Capitol's dome. Each work features a female muse representing a virtue of the State of Michigan. Commerce, who sits in front a ship, is depicted wearing the winged helmet traditionally associated with Mercury and Hermes, gods of commerce.
The paperweight is round and measures 3 1/2" wide.
