The Coat of Arms of the State of Michigan was designed by Territorial Governor Lewis Cass and was officially adopted on June 2, 1835. It changed over the years and in 1911 as part of Michigan's 75th anniversary celebrations the legislature officially adopted Cass's original design.
The top banner reads in Latin "E Pluribus Unum" meaning "from many, one." The 3 arrows represent defense, the olive branch peace, and 13 olives represent the 1st 13 states. The Latin "Tuebor" means "I will defend." The lower banner reads "Si Quaeris Peninsulam Amoenam Circumspice" which means "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you."
